Speaker(s): Pastor Steven Scibelli
Sermon # 11626
11:00 AM on 2/10/2019
We’re going to have two amazing men [share] who had pretty severe surgeries done. First is P. Steve Merullo and then P. Fred Ellis.
P. Steve – God is good. We all know that, but it’s so great to have P. Fred back. The surgery was 100%. We all have the same doctor, Dr. Finney. P. Fred, myself, Phil Norman, and Mrs. Turmel. P. Fred and I get 20%! He’s a great doctor. So good to be here. By faith I came. I wasn’t feeling good. Like P. Scibelli says, it all goes when going so I went and it’s gone.
P. Fred Ellis
This is my first service I attended [since the surgery]. I had surgery two weeks ago. Each day, I’m feeling stronger. It’s the results of prayer. I’m overwhelmed by the love and prayers of the Body. It’s good to worship. Can’t lift my hands over my head but I can put them on the arm rest and lift them up. I’m looking forward to a great message.
Rom. 8:35-39, give a shout out to Leah Moore. I was thinking of you and praying for you. I saw your face and it was like seeing the face of God. She’s a great woman of God and she has a great husband too. All the years she was secretary with P. Schaller. I never heard an unkind word from her mouth. She is perfection in position!
When it comes to – I was leaving the house and my wife said your pants are too short and your tie doesn’t match the shirt and the coat doesn’t go. She redid everything. She said, how old are you? 72. When do you think it will happen? Heaven! When you minister in parts of the world, third world, you wear what is clean, not what matches.
P. Eugene read a great portion of Scripture. We read and thought about it many times. It was like the first time I had seen it. He says 18 things. He says “in all these things.” Say that. In all these things. We are not more than conquerors without all these things. In all these things we are more than conquerors. In all, more than. Many times I’ve wanted to get away from a lot of things. You think if things would change. If my health would change, my finances would change, change my partner – husband or wife – change jobs, location. We feel if we just change. God is saying you get to the next place and it’s going to be the same.
I had a job in prison for murderers under 18 years of age. Not a fun job but a job given by God. The man I was working for, Conrad, was a miserable boss. He never let you go early. He always made you stay late, gave you the lousiest jobs, and always swearing and vulgar. I applied for another place, stayed 2 days and that guy was worse. I said can I come back to my old job? God is in the spiritual business of changing me. Paul is saying to the church of Rome which was under persecution, 125 of them in Rome in a city of 4 million that worshipped Caesar and did sacrifice. They were living underground in the catacombs and would surface only for certain reasons. He is saying to them in all these things you are more than a conqueror. I’d like to go to Rome or Cypress or an island in the Pacific and get out of here. In all these things we are more than conquerors. There is one who has been defeated.
He’s given six names in Rev 12. Satan, devil, accuser, deceiver, serpent. Six names. John talks about him and says we have overcome him by the blood of the lamb and the word of our testimony and they loved not their lives unto the death. He’s been defeated. Can you say that? He’s been defeated. The defeated one wants to project defeat on me and on you. He wants us to look at what we are experiencing and begin to think defeat and live defeat. I wonder how many out there even who are born again live defeated lives all the time.
Lk 10:17-18, They came back, the 70 and had great joy. Even the devils are subject unto us at your name. That’s great. I beheld Satan fall like lightning from heaven. God dropped him like a lightning bolt. He’s going to keep dropping him. There’s a six position drop until he gets to the lake of fire. Six times. Down, down, down. I beheld Satan as lighting from heaven. He’s a liar. Because he’s a liar, he’d like to project toward us with demons, the world and using our osn which has also been defeated. Don’t tell me about your flesh. It’s crucified. I’m crucified with Christ nevertheless I live yet not I but Christ lives in me, and the life I live I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not frustrate the grace of God. “Frustrate” is the same word for divorce. I’m not getting a divorce from grace. Dead.
I had an uncle that ran a funeral home. I won’t say why. I use to hang around there with my cousin Joe. I had a bad habit as a kid, 12 years old, and I always searched the pockets. Sometimes I’d find 20 or 30 bucks. What are they going to do with it? What do you have to say for yourself? Nothing. The person is gone. They are dead.
The Bible says what? You are dead and your life is hid with Christ in God. The enemy tires to use the osn and project defeat. Say this: I’m not my past. All these psychological – I want to call them “evolutionaries.” They do resemble monkey thinking at times. They bring up someone’s past and have you go through the memories. Forgetting those things that are behind and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press on toward the mark of the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Some don’t like what I’m saying. It’s not going to bother me that much. I’m not my past. Amen. I’m victorious over my past. The past is gone. Moses killed an Egyptian. David killed Uriah the Hittite and Paul killed Christians and they wrote the Bible. I’m not my past. I’m not my sin. Yes, I’m a sinner but I’m not my sin. I’m not my osn. I’m not what the world says I am. I’m not my culture. I’m not my family. I am what I am by the grace of God. We live in defeat. They live defeated lives.
Rom. 7:23-25, He says there is a war going on in me. Every time I try to do good, evil is with me….I have no ability to do anything. I’m a wretched man. Who shall deliver me from this body of sin and death? I thank God through Jesus Christ. I’m excited about being victorious in God. Are you with me? I’m not a Pentecostal. I’m not a Baptist. I’m a Christian. This is important to understand as a believer and not live a defeated life.
Rom. 7 it says 27 times the word “I” and it doesn’t appear in Roman 8. The word “Spirit” appears 19 times. He lived in the victory of the H.S. I ministered for 32 years in areas where there was tremendous war, poverty, illiteracy, genocides. It’s so important to have a message of victory. You never know what is going to happen. It’s so easy to live in projected defeat even based on actual defeat. The projections come and the enemy is the author of them. How important to live in a victory life. How’s it going? “Well, do you know what is going on?” I don’t want to know. I want to know what is going in God.
Rom. 4:16. I’m not going to live a defeated life. I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I don’t walk about like the devil is the devil.Watch this verse. Greater is he that is in me than he that is in the world. I don’t care about the world anyway, the news and politics and all that is going on. So many are so wrapped up in it. In their mind, they get defeated by the news. That’s why I read the Bible. The Bible shows me victory, the victory of God, of the cross. It is finished. It’s in the perfect indicative passive, an action that is eternally, absolutely true and you receive the action of what God did at the cross. We are victorious.
I ran two homes for heroin addicts. I loved it when they used my car for armed robberies. Some of them are pastoring today. They were not dealt with according to their sin, failure, culture, background. They were dealt with by victorious people in Christ. That’s how you handle people. That’s how God handled me. We are victorious people.
1 Jn 2:13 young men, you’ve overcome by the word. Overcome is NIKAO. I was going to wear my Nike sneakers but it wouldn’t look right. You overcome by the one who lives in you. Greater is he that is in your than in Dr. Finney. Thank God for Dr. Finney but God is greater. Satan is in the world, the god of this world, the prince of the power of the air. Greater is he that lives in you than he that is in this world. I walk around “I can’t do that.” I’ll never be able to have victory. Defeated patterns in the thinking. They keep going from childhood and on and on. People live defeated lives. …my flesh gets crucified.
What do you want today? French fries, hot dogs, cupcakes. This time, I brought money. Last time, my granddaughter had to pay the bill. I had such a good time with those six graders evangelizing. They are so free. People get teenage-ish and they are a little bit different but six graders have a good time.
This guy was talking to someone and I came into the conversation. He said my wife is a mess, no job, no place to live, lost my wallet. I can’t do anything about that but I can do something about your mental attitude. God loves you, sir. He listened for 20 minutes. He started to cry. Our gospel is one of victory and power. No condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Maybe you are around people at work and it’s nothing but defeat. Talk about it, think about it, and smell defeat. God is wanting you to live in victory.
Thanks be unto God, 2 Cor. 2:14-17. He always causes us to triumph. How often? Always. How often? Always. Now thanks be unto God. It says grace be unto God who always causes us to triumph, leading a procession of triumph. I am in front of a procession of people claiming victory. Always causes us to triumph in Christ. When are you out of Christ? Never. In Christ, I am victorious all the time even if you think I am defeated. I’m not losing my mind. I’ve showed this before.
At the Liberia graduation, they gave me this for an award. A bullet from an M-1. Thank you for coming to the graduation. This is what we are giving as an award to our graduation speaker. Thank God it didn’t come out of a rifle. This destroyed our country. This saved it (a cross).
I’m not thinking about this. I’m thinking about this, the cross. The cross, the blood, and the life of God. I got victory and you got victory. The defeated one wants to project defeat. I can’t lose my job with God or my calling or purpose.
I went home one day and said to my wife, I lost my job. You mean the one you went six years to school to get? That’s great! God has got something better. She’s living in victory and I’m living in defeat.
Husbands, look at your wife as victorious. Don’t look at your children’s defeat. Look at the victory God has done and is doing in their lives. Jesus doesn’t see defeat or sin. The Father sees the Son. The Son sees the Spirit. It’s as simple as that. I got my eyes on what happened to me. You know what they did to me, what another Christian did to me? You poor -what do you want me to do? God allows things to happen. Have you noticed that? To draw us to himself.
It took a while to realize what he’s doing. I went back to Africa and they said it’s better off you are not here. I was not happy. What did I do? I went on the mission field and came back and they didn’t want me here because I’m connected to this church more than they wanted me to be. I said to my wife, we are moving. Where? Baltimore. She said, really? Where are we going to live? I don’t know and personally don’t care. I have a U-Haul and an old couch that is still in my basement. It doesn’t smell. It’s a victorious couch. We put the couch and one chair and some people kept some of my furniture and we drove to P. Ron’s house and he took us in and we began. Here we are today.
It was a victorious thing that took place. Not a defeat. Not something to become emotional about or introspective. God wants us not to just have it in our thinking but proclaim it.
I went to visit someone in the hospital. I said repeat after me, I’m not going to die. I’m not going to die. I can’t hear you, I said. I made him say it 12 times. He started smiling. He said P. Scibelli, I’m not going to die. That’s not the power of positive thinking like that ridiculous person who has books on it. God has not given you the spirit of fear but of love, power and a sound mind. Don’t be ashamed or live in fear or turn away. Confess what God says about you. I am what I am by the grace of God.
How come some say this person is a model from Hellywood and this person is not good looking? Who is to determine who is good looking or not? God says you are fearfully and wonderfully made. How many do everything they can to look beautiful when they already are. “That person is ugly.” “That person is beautiful.” Who said that? Marty Veader is beautiful to me even when he punches me in the ribs.
Paul never lived in defeat. Peter, didn’t walk around, “I’m a denier. I’m a denier. I’m a denier. I’m a denier. I’m no good. I’m worthless.” He said, you denied the Lord in Acts. 3.
He stood up in power because he was living a victory life. He raised Lazarus from the dead. He transformed the thinking of the woman at the well into victory thinking. The man with the infirmity needed victory thinking. Jn 8 The woman caught in adultery, that’s victory thinking.
Are you with me? Sunday morning. Thinking in victory and not living a defeated life. Seven pieces of armor. Loins…breastplate, helmet, gospel shoes, shield of faith, sword of the Spirit and throne of grace. You’re going to be in a war but when you know you won.
2 Tim 2:5 run as though you’ve won. If you are in a race and now you are a winner before the race starts, there’s not a lot of pressure on you. I got the trophy before I ran. ….I want to ride him back. I know he’s not a white horse. He’s a red horse. I’d like to have his color changed so I can ride Secretariat back. Triple Crown winner. Victory. The woman that owned him all she thought about was victory. In my family am I leading my family in defeat. Am I leading my family in victory? A husband in a marriage. As a wife. As a business person. As a person in the Christian school. As a student in Bible school, am I thinking that way ….he is the defeated one.
Rev 2 and 3 seven churches are told he that overcomes, you get seven different rewards. Imagine … I don’t know what we’re going to do. …just close the church. All that does is bring bad news to infect people’s minds with a defeated attitude. Hello? It’s so important for me to get this kind of thinking. I know who I am in Christ, in the Body. This is not just for P. Schaller or P. Love. This is for all of us to think with God. P. Stevens came to me in 1983 on the stairs…are you still doing the street ministry? Yeah. When are you going to get out of it and become a pastor? I said I used to trust your discernment. You don’t have any. He went (laugh). When he ordained me, he reminded me of that. We got on our knees in Springfield and he said to me, remember the stairs? Remember, I’ll never do this? If God has called me to the next step, defeat is staying where I want to stay. It was good, it was God and now it’s gone. Live in that. I want to live in victory in God. The children of Israel…God crippled the greatest nation on the face of the earth with 10 plagues in case any country even America thinks they can do without God. God crippled the greatest empire in a few days with ten plagues. He brought them out with a high arm.
Ex 12:14 Blood came on the house and he brought them out. They came out with a high and holy arm singing praises to God. Egypt was defeated and they were victorious. It wasn’t a governmental system that did it. It was God himself. It was Jesus himself.
As he stands in front of Joshua in Josh 5:13-14 he is facing going into the Promised Land. He sees a man with a sword drawn in his hand. He wasn’t passively in. Christian pacifists. He pulled it out. Are you for us or for them? Jesus said neither. I am not for you. I am you. I come as the head of the Body. That’s what captain means, SAR in the Hebrew. I am the Head of the Body and the Head is attached to the Body. God is me. I am you. I put the Holy Spirit in you. The H. S. is God not just a power.
Are you listening? Come on, Sunday morning. Come on. You can get excited too. Oh, he’s out of his mind up there today. I need a sandwich. I’m giving you a gospel sandwich. We’re going to go in and defeat these seven nations. Joshua bowed and worshipped God. The one who gave us victory over sin the devil, wrong relationships, victory in our families, in our cities, in our state, with the gospel message we have.
God has given us victory and it’s a gift of grace. I’m not going to live a defeated life. I know no defeat. I know no defeat. Jesus is my Captain and I know no defeat.
